Clam meat or known as Kakka Erachi in Kerala and is a very common delicacy among Keralites. A very common meat in the coastal areas of Kerala. You would find that almost all Keralites would have made this dish more than once at their homes. Cleaning is a tedious task, however the effort is worth it…. You get to buy them half cleaned ( that is shells taken off ) from stores.
To clean them in an easy manner, make sure that you give a squeeze on the flesh side which is the top portion and a black spot jumps out. Discard it. Follow the same for all and finally give a thorough wash for the entire batch. This is a favorite dish at my home and here is a simple recipe for you to try. Very much similar to a Beef Stir fry and tastes very good.
Clam Meat Cleaned – 250 gms
Onions finely chopped – 1 cup
Green chilies – 2 nos sliced thinly
Red Chilly – 2 nos crushed
Ginger-Garlic paste – 2 tsp
Red Chilly powder – 1 tbsp
Turmeric Powder – ½ tsp
Meat Masala – 1 tbsp
Black Pepper powder – ½ tbsp
Coriander Powder – 2 tbsp
Salt – 1 tsp
Curry leaves – few
. Clean the clam meat. In a pressure cooker add in the clam meat and all the spice powders and cook for 2-3 whistles.
. In a hot pan, pour some oil to the hot oil, add in the onions and sauté well. To this add in the green and red chilies and the ginger-garlic paste, curry leaves and mix well.
. When the aroma of the ginger and garlic is sensed, add in a little bit of meat masala, coriander powder and black pepper and mix well.
. To this add the cooked clam and mix well. Keep on low flame and stir occasionally till all the stock is dried up and the whole mixture gets to a dry texture.
. Turn off when it is completely to a dry texture and serve hot along with rice or chapatti.
Note : If you like it spicy, you could add in more pepper powder. Since my kids have, I could no make it spicier than this.
