Breadfruit or called as ‘Kaddachakka’ in Malayalam, is a common item that is used in Kerala. It could be put into the family of jackfruit, but smaller in size. They are easily available . Cooks fast and is simple to make a dish with them. They could also be roasted or fried if not too ripened. Here, I have followed a recipe that my mother told me.
Breadfruit – 250 gms
Onions – 1 cups sliced
Ginger – 1/2 tsp sliced
Garlic – 3-4 cloves, sliced
Coconut Milk – 1 cup
Chilly powder – 1 tbsp
Coriander Powder – 1 1/2 tbsp
Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
All apices – 1 tbsp
Meat Masala Powder – 1 1/2 tbsp
Coriander leaves – 1/2 cup
Salt – as per requirement.
. Cut the breadfruit to small pieces and boil them on medium heat with salt sprinkled in water, till they are soft and mushy. Keep them aside.
. On a hot pan, add some oil and then add the onions, ginger and garlic and saute till it gets brown.
. Add all the spices and masala and mix well.
. when the masala powder starts getting roasted, add the cooked breadfruit and a little bit of the water. Add the coriander leaves and stir well.
. Let it to boil. To this add the freshly prepared coconut milk and stir well. Make sure that while adding the coconut milk, to keep the flame at low, or else the milk may curdle and the whole curry would spoil. Add salt as per requirement.
. When slightly warm , take of from heat. Garnish and serve hot.
. This is a pure vegetarian dish.
